16 towns and a city in Pangasinan have been placed under leptospirosis watch after 4 deaths were reported.
Dr. Anna Maria Teresa de Guzman, provincial health officer, said that a number of towns and a city reported cases of leptospirosis, which is a disease prevalent during rainy season.
Four fatalities have been reported, one each from Mangaldan, Manaoag, San Nicolas, and Tayug. There were also cases reported in some municipalities: 10 cases from Mangaldan, 3 cases from Sta. Barbara, 2 each from Sual, san Jacinto, Rosales, Aguilar, and Balungao, and 1 each from Bani, Alaminos City, Pozorrubio, Manaoag, Lingayen, San Manuel, San Nicolas, Tayug, Bayambang, and Manaoag.
De Guzman warned the people with the dangers brought by leptospirosis. She reminded the people to wear boots if they would walk through flooded areas, because bacteria-causing leptospirosis can be acquired when floodwaters which are contaminated with mice urine enters the body through an open wound.
Symptoms of leptospirosis include fever which lasts for 3 to 5 days, abdominal pains, and body malaise. Health authorities also added that it may lead to kidney and liver failure, respiratory diseases, and death when not treated properly.
