Star Wars fans are mourning over the death of Kenny Baker, the British actor who first played the robot R2-D2 in the first six installations.
Baker died on Saturday at the age of 81. Baker’s niece, in an interview with The Guardian, said the actor suffered from a long illness and his death was expected but it’s sad nonetheless.
Baker, who was 3 feet and 8 inches tall also appeared in the “The Empire Strikes Back”, “Star Wars Holiday Special”, “Return of the Jedi” and with the three prequels. He was also the “droid consultant” last year on “The Force Awakens” film.
The actor began performing in theaters and then in a circus, ice shows and musicals with The Mini Tones. He also starred on other hit films including The Goonies, Time Bandits, Flash Gordon, Labyrinth, The Elephant Man, and Willow.
Baker will always be our R2-D2, our hero who brought life to our favorite character. May the force be with you, Baker!
